Speech of His Highness The Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah
at the Banquet Held by His Excellency Parvez Musharraf,
President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

In the Name Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful.

H.E. President Parvez Musharraf,
President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,
Your Excellencies,
Dear guests;

It is my great pleasure, and that of my delegation to be with you this evening at the start of our visit to your country.

I’d like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to you Mr. President, to the members of your government and to the people of Pakistan for the warm reception and the generous hospitality we have been shown. Our welcome here reflects the noble legacy and true generosity of the Pakistani people who have strong ties with the people of Kuwait.

I would also like to thank Your Excellency for the kind words you graciously expressed and for this lavish banquet.

Our visit to your country comes as an expression of our real appreciation for the depth and strength of the relationship that is shared between our two countries. This bond is steadily growing, and is supported by common viewpoints and objectives across a broad spectrum of political, economic and social issues. We are moving forward together with mutual trust and a shared will to build strong bilateral relations in trade, investment and the economy. Pakistan’s human resources – its skilled manpower – are also key to the growth and development of our two countries.

It is with great pleasure, Mr. President, to note the success and achievement your government has had in the field of economic reform, both in terms of privatization and in terms of the new laws designed to attract local and foreign investment.

We in Kuwait will always remember with pleasure and gratitude Pakistan’s stance towards Kuwait during the ordeal of the brutal Iraqi invasion. This support was not just confined to joining other Islamic countries and our allies in repulsing the aggressors, but continued afterwards with Pakistan’s efforts to encourage Iraq to observe the Security Council’s resolutions, especially during your membership of the Security Council.

We are delighted that our two countries are developing ever closer ties to one another and we look forward to new investment opportunities that will continue to strengthen this relationship. We hope that this visit will achieve fruitful results that will be of real benefit to the people of our countries.

We in Kuwait fully appreciate the role the Pakistani community plays in the economic, social and cultural life of our country. Their presence represents just one of the many connections that bind our two countries together.

We also greatly appreciate the important role Pakistan plays in the Islamic Ummah, and in trying to find lasting solutions to the region’s conflicts. These troubling issues should be dealt with through the principles of international legitimacy.

There are many challenges and dangers that threaten the security and stability of the region, but we face them together, and they will only be resolved through discussion and cooperation.

We are responsible for resolving conflicts through peaceful means and must always strive to avoid the use or threat of force.

We look forward to working closely with Pakistan in regional and international organizations so we can achieve our common objectives of a stable and secure world where development can flourish.

Allow me once more Mr. President to thank you for your generous hospitality. The members of my delegation and I are sure that our visit will achieve all that we hope for in terms of bringing mutual benefit to our people.
