Under the auspices of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and with his participation, Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) celebrated the 50th anniversary of its establishment on Wednesday 11th November 2009, at the chamber's headquarters.

His Highness the Amir arrived at the venue at 10:30 a.m., and was warmly welcomed by KCCI Chairman Mohammad Thunayyan Al-Ghanim, and members of the board of directors.

Attending the ceremony were His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, National Assembly Speaker Jassem Mohammad Al-Kharafi, members of the ruling family, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, First Deputy Premier and Defense Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Acting Minister of Amiri Diwan Affairs Sheikh Ali Jarrah Al-Sabah, and top state officials.

The ceremony began with a recitation of the Holy Quran.

KCCI Chairman then delivered a speech in which he said that the relationship between Kuwait and commerce was "an activity of living" that was in tune with the nature of the place.

He noted that it was commerce that gave Kuwait its emblem; the golden falcon with wide-spread wings protecting the ship, the symbol of commerce.

KCCI's building was the first union to be established in the national economic sector, he added.

Al-Ghanim said that today's celebration came to acknowledge the efforts of our forefathers and their wisdom and vision, on which they based the principles of trust, dialogue and democratic decision-making.

The chairman recounted the achievements of KCCI over the past 50 years, saying that it was established after Kuwait entered the club of oil-exporting countries. This prompted the setting of two goals; participating in the regulation of a new economy, and working to create a strong private sector.

KCCI has worked over the past 50 years to realize these two goals, and in the process it found great cooperation on the part of the Kuwaiti leadership and constitutional institutions, as well as citizens and civil societies.

He said, however, that many local and external factors made the realization of these two goals difficult, but KCCI was proud, regardless of the degree of success, in that its performance had always been sincere, professional and well-studied.

Al-Ghanim also noted KCCI's role in placing economic legislations and dealing with related matters, while recounting how during the 1990 invasion of Kuwait, KCCI worked with its Gulf counterparts to preserve Kuwait's commercial archives.

Moreover, he said KCCI placed emphasis on education, including training and rehabilitation, out of belief that it was the main solution to the imbalance in labor structure, to ensure the continuation of democratic practice, and to guarantee freedom.

He announced that KCCI would be granting five annual masters' scholarships to Kuwaitis as of next year.

At the Arab level, he said KCCI was committed to the Arab economic project out of its belief in the importance of Arab economic integration.

UAE businessman Jumaa Al-Majed then gave a speech on this occasion in which he expressed on behalf of all guests present his congratulations on KCCI's 50th anniversary.

He said that the whole world was witness to Kuwait's advancement, not only at the economic level, but also in the social, political and cultural spheres, adding that Kuwait was now an advanced states that offered an attractive business and financial climate.

Al-Majed said that over the past 50 years, KCCI actively contributed to the strengthening of inter-GCC commerce relations, as well as GCC-Arab trade.

KCCI, with its vast experience, had become a true expression of the visions of the private sector, its stances and aspirations within the frame of Kuwait's national economic interests, he said.

Following the speeches, a documentary about KCCI was screened, and then the organizers presented a commemorative gift to His Highness the Amir on this occasion.

KCCI also honored former and present chairmen and board members of KCCI.

His Highness the Amir then left the venue with the same warmth with which he was received.
