His Highness the Amir of the State of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah sponsored and attended, Tuesday, 3rd November 2009 the inauguration of a specialized international conference on alternative energy organized by the Kuwait Society of Engineers at the Courtyard, Marriot Hotel.

His Highness the Amir was greeted upon arrival to the venue by Society Chairman Talal Al-Qahtani and members of the organizing committee.

Among the attendees at the inaugural session were His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Parliament Speaker Jassem Al-Kharafi, Deputy Chief of the National Guard Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Deputy Minister of Amiri Diwan Affairs Sheikh Ali Jarrah Al-Sabah, and a host of senior state officials.

Society Chairman Talal Al-Qahtani addressed the inauguration of the "Alternative Energy Applications ... Option or Necessity" and began with gratitude to His Highness the Amir of the State of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for his sponsoring of the event and attending the inauguration.

He pointed out the state's non-wavering support of all international initiatives in the domains of peaceful power, alternative energies, global warming, scarcity of water resources, and peaceful application of technology brings pride to the country's engineers and specialists, as well as Kuwaiti citizens, and earns the state great respect on the world scene.

He specifically recalled the contribution of USD 150 million to be invested in energy research, and also pointed out that the ongoing event, another effort with great government support, saw a record number of participants from over 75 states. The number of specialists taking part had not been seen since the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro back in 1992, he pointed out.

The official said the first priority and focus of all sessions would be to help issue of "Kuwait Declaration" as a comprehensive document listing the findings and recommendations of the world's top specialists and mechanisms of implementation that would be implemented from Kuwait and later expanded to cover the immediate region and the whole world at a later phase.

The said document would then be presented for review to the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. This would further enrich our own engineers' experience and secure Kuwait a proud position in the march towards development, he said.

Turning back to the organizers of the event and its many venues, he expressed gratitude and pride in the over 500 volunteer engineers who worked on this project for over two years and invested their different specializations as they honored their oath to serve country and people.

Also addressing the opening session, President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations Barry Grear said, "This conference is an important one for giving advice to engineers and other decision makers about future trends in energy technologies." "As we consider influences on changing climate and our contribution to developing countries' with the millennium development goals, any increase in the availability of efficient and effective energy generation will be a great contribution to our world communities." He hailed Kuwaiti efforts in the field of energy and noted the state's many projects in this field are designed and carried out and managed, with great professionalism, by young engineers working "with great enthusiasm." He addressed His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah saying that his sponsoring of the event serves as testimony to support to the state's engineers society, whom he congratulated for succeeding to prepare this conference and attracting this considerable number of participants.

Head of the concerned specialist committee Dr. Walid Al-Bazzaz for his part said the topic of the conference was of great importance to Mankind as it faces many challenges including energy supply sustainability and environmental integrity, as well as capacity building. Development in this field is crucial, he said, as the tools of "learning and application" are the means to sustain overall development.

As opposed to the "developed", "developing", and "under-developed" categorization of countries in the recent past, the most important categories nowadays are along the lines of "energy rich" and "energy poor" nations, he stressed.

Remarking that energy is neither free nor cheap, he said the cost sometimes falls on governments' shoulders and occasionally on citizens themselves. This lays a great responsibility on the shoulders of the engineers of the world community to try and harness non-conventional sources of energy and to upgrade efficiency and reliability.

The official noted that the speakers at the conference are of immense expertise and the participants and the engineers community in all should benefit as much as possible from their remarks and input. He said 11 speakers of extraordinary standing in the field are to share their views and recommendations, along with other specialists.

The 106 papers to be discussed in 18 sessions are invaluable resource for our endeavor, both engineers and students in this field or ordinary laymen, he stressed.

He pointed out the venue was result of commitment and devotion by young Kuwaiti engineers putting in the effort to help advance their own homeland as well as contribute to the betterment of conditions for Mankind.

His Highness the Amir, sponsor of the event, left the venue after the speeches and after a documentary was screened on the contributions and achievements of the Engineers Society, having received a commemorative token presented by the organizers.
