His Highness the Amir extols Kuwaiti athletes

His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on Sunday 13 July 2008, hailed Kuwaiti athletes, who had won several recent Asian and Arab sport events, as the "pride of their country".

He was addressing a ceremony thrown at the Bayan Palace for honoring Kuwaiti champions.

HH the Amir congratulated them on their wins of sport championship, appreciating their efforts to notch up such successes, which he deemed as a "success of the Kuwaiti nation".

He also thanked them for raising the name of Kuwait high on local, regional and international sport arenas.

He wished that such successes could favorably affect the local sport arena, urging all citizens, especially athletes, to get united for developing Kuwait in all fields.

"Kuwait is our goal. We are looking forward to making it a nation of amity, brotherliness, coherence and equity, a secure and prosperous nation, of which everyone should be proud." His Highness the Amir then held a luncheon in honor of the winners of diverse sport contests.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Commerce and Industry and State Minister for National Assembly Affairs and Acting Minister of Social Affairs Ahmad Baqer Al-Abdullah, Acting Minister of Amiri Diwan Affairs Abdel-Rahman al-Otaiqi, HH the Amir's Office Chief Ahmad al-Fahad, Amiri Protocol Chief Sheikh Khalid Al-Sabah and Acting Director-General of the Public Authority for Youth and Sports Isam Abdel-Rahim.

It was also attended by members of the Kuwait Handball Association and the national handball team, who won the second place in the 13th Asian handball championship in Isfahan, Iran on February 16-25, and winners of the 10th Asian Handball Champions in Kuwait on June 4-14.

During this championship, the Kuwaiti Qadsiya Sports Club came first while Sulaibikhat came second.

Also present in the party were winners of several local, Arab and Asian soccer, volleyball, basketball and squash events.

On behalf of all athletes, Salmiya Sports Club Chairman Sheikh Khalid Al-Sabah thanked HH the Amir for the ceremony, in which Kuwaiti sportsmen were honored.

He vowed that all Kuwaiti athletes would do their best to raise the name of Kuwait high at all sport events.
